Deanston 2015

It was actually a cotton mill for 180 years before it in 1965 became a distillery. It took 9 months to reconstruct it from the cotton mill to a distillery, so since 1966 they have been producing single malt whisky. The town of Deanston is evolved around the cotton mill and therefore there is a strong connection between the distillery and the small town of Deanston.

For this reason we chose the “Deanston Heritage Tour” which includes a tour through the distillery and a tour through the town ending with a visit in the tasting room to taste some of the Deanston single malt whiskies.

The tour around the town was very informative and the guide was very dedicated to the history. We were the only 3 people on the tour, so it was very relaxed, and we had a lot of time to ask questions and take pictures around the distillery.

A couple of features that is special for Deanston Distillery which is worth mentioning:
- They have one of the only open Mash Tuns in Scotland.
- Part of the movie Angels Share is recorded here.

The tour ended in the tasting room where we tasted 3 Deanston whiskies. The 2 standard expressions, the 12 year old and their Virgin Oak, and the “Fill Your Own” from the distillery shop. That was a 10 year old cask strength whisky from a sherry cask.

It was a great combination of local history and whisky production, all from Deanston. Nice and calm people at the distillery, and with a good restaurant attached, the tour through the beautiful nature, old town and the old cotton mill (now the Deanston Distillery) resulted in a great day! I will rate this tour 6/10.
