I visited Glengoyne Distillery in 2013 with 2 friends,
where we booked the “Cask Tasting Tour”. A bit misleading name, but I will get
back to that. We were only 5 on the tour, so that was great. We started the
tour by watching a video about Glengoyne Distillery and their history. After
this we were taken out back to see their water source.
The tour guide was a retired computer engineer (or
something like that), so the whisky knowledge wasn’t as high as it could be, but
nothing to complaint about. Afterwards we went to the production where we got
the entire trip from barley to spirit.
Now the time had come for the warehouse, and what we
thought would be the first taste of Glengoyne whisky. But no… We were just
shown around, and then we headed to a room in the main building. Here we got to
taste 3 different Glengoyne whiskies where one of them were from the cask in
the Distillery Shop. That was a bit disappointing.
It was a okay tour, and the distillery is located so
it is easy to reach from Glasgow. But charging a lot of money, and lead the
customer to think that you get to taste from a cask will just disappoint. It will
never be the other way around. I will rate this tour 6 out of 10.
