In March 2013, I visited Tullibardine Distillery. At
home, it seemed to be a little difficult to reach the distillery from
Edinburgh, but when we went, it was actually not that bad and quite a nice
trip. We had ordered their "connoisseur tour", which is also the most
expensive tour, and it turned out to be a very smart move. The trip included a
tour around "heart" of Tullibardine Distillery where you got to see
the process of the production from start to finish.
Their guide was incredibly chatty and responded to
everything from A to Z with a smile, and we were allowed to see, open, look and
touch everything. After this we went into their warehouse and got to see all
the barrels from floor to ceiling, and we were allowed to smell different types
of barrels from 8 to 40 years.
Eventually we ended up in their tasting room where we
had to taste 3 different whiskies. The guide was absolutely fantastic, and made
the trip go from being really good to super! For an example when we should taste
the 3 whiskies, he pulled out a bottle of "spirit" (see glosary), and
it was actually surprisingly good, and upon request we also tasted another that
wasn’t on the program. At the end we were allowed to smell a £ 1000 whiskey,
but when he already had it out open, he poured a few drops in a glass, so that we
could smell it bit easier! And yes ... When it was in the glass it would be blasphemy
not to taste!
When the tour was finished we was handed a gift bag
with a Glencairn glass with Tullibardine logo and a miniature whisky. Besides
this, you got a voucher of £ 5 to their shop (equals a bottle in my bag). A
great tour and I will rate it 7/10.
